Understanding Construction Documentation Fall 2019

Construction Documents are the basic means of communication in the industry and are the key to success in our industry is a combination of project comprehension and execution.

This full day seminar will focus on teaching attendees two important aspects of construction documents and their role in the industry.  First attendees with learn the basic framework of construction plans and specifications, followed by in depth discussion of project execution requirements from the bid process through to substantial performance of the work.


The morning section will provide a clear understanding of the requirements and information found in construction documents:

  • Construction document preparation
  • Document interpretation and resolution
  • where to typically find required information
  • Document use for bidding & field purposed
  • how to interpret the documents towards the installation and performance of the item


Following this foundational understanding of construction documents, the afternoon section will move into:

  • construction protocol from the point of bid award to completion of construction
  • the importance and relevance of issued documentation including:
  • bid call, addenda and clarifications
  • field memos/site instructions
  • price change requests/contemplated change notices
  • progress certificates, and
  • application for substantial performance
  • possible impact of changes on the overall building performance


This combination of project documentation and execution within this seminar will provide the basics needed to effectively use construction documents to the benefit of operations and the projects as a whole.  Attendance for the entire seminar is required to receive recognition for completion and Gold Seal Credit.

This course is appropriate for both site and office staff who can benefit from a better understanding of construction documents, terminology, or the construction process as a whole.


About the Instructor:


Kurt is the son of a journeyman carpenter, starting work on sites under his father’s direction.  Kurt is now a Registered Architect, operating as the managing partner in Kreate Architecture and Design Ltd.  His education background includes Diploma in Architectural Technology (NAIT), Bachelor of Fine Arts studies (Carleton, University of Alberta and University of Regina) and Diploma in Architecture (RAIC Syllabus Program).  He has been involved in hands-on aspects of the building industry since 1976, participating in both construction work and consulting aspects.  He continues to work as an Architect in the Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on projects ranging from $40,000 up to $20 million in size.
